Headshots or Personal Branding Photography? Which One Your Business Needs

The difference between a headshot session and a personal branding session, what each costs in time and money, and how to tell which one your business needs.

The two phrases get used as if they meant the same thing. They do not, and choosing the wrong one is the most common way people waste a photography budget.

What a headshot is for

A headshot answers one question: what does this person look like? It is the image beside your name on a company page, a conference program, a LinkedIn profile. One look, one background, a tight crop, and a short session. A good headshot session takes thirty minutes to an hour and produces two or three usable frames.

Headshots are necessary. They are also interchangeable by design: the format is standardized so that a page of twelve partners looks like one firm. That is the point of a headshot, and it is also its limit.

What a personal branding session is for

A personal branding session answers a different question: who is this person, and why would I trust them with this? The images have to carry a point of view: how you work, what you value, the room you belong in. They are used in places where you are the brand, not one of twelve: your own website, your speaker page, the press kit, the book jacket, the pitch deck, the social profiles that do the quiet selling between meetings.

That means more than one look, more than one setting, a palette and a mood that hold together, and a plan for where every image will live. On this site, The Frame is the focused version of this: a private vision call, a personalized mood and inspiration board, creative direction, a 90-minute shoot and 8 professionally edited images, for $1,555. The Hot Seat Experience and The CEO Project are the expanded versions, with recorded interview content and, for the CEO Project, four months of sessions.

The honest comparison

Headshot session Personal branding session
Time on set 30–60 minutes 90 minutes to several sessions
Looks One Three or more, planned as a set
Planning Little Vision call and mood board first
Output 2–3 frames of your face 8–20 edited images across settings and moods, plus video for some experiences
Where it lives Directory pages, badges, programs Website, speaker page, press, book, decks, profiles
Shelf life Until your hair changes Two to three years, if planned well

When a headshot is enough

  • You are an employee and your company supplies the format.
  • You need one picture, quickly, for one place.
  • The brand is the firm's, not yours.

In those cases a well-lit, well-directed headshot is exactly right, and we are happy to point you to the fastest route to one; a one-hour Custom Experience, which includes 7 professionally edited images, covers it with room to spare.

When you need the branding session

  • Your name is the business, or it is becoming the business: founder, consultant, author, speaker, creative director, clinician in private practice.
  • You are about to be more visible than you are now: a launch, a book, a funding round, a new role, a stage.
  • Your website, your profiles and your press mentions currently show three different people, because the images were taken at three different times by three different photographers.
  • You keep declining opportunities that ask for "a few high-resolution images of you", because you do not have any you like.

The last one is the tell. If the request for images produces a small wave of dread, the problem is not the headshot.

What it costs, in time rather than money

A headshot costs an hour of your week. A branding session costs a conversation, an afternoon of preparation, a morning on set and three days of choosing images, spread over two to four weeks. It gives back the hours you would otherwise spend, every quarter, hunting for a photo that is good enough.

The middle path

If you are not sure, do not buy the large option to be safe. Book a Vision Call: a private 30 to 60 minute conversation with Irma, $200, no commitment beyond it. It exists precisely for this question. Many of those calls end with "you need a headshot and a plan, not a project yet", and that is a good outcome.
